Artist Statement
Byeong Sam Jeon is an electronic artist and curator. His work is driven by his belief that technology enables all sorts of people to deepen and enhance interpersonal communication. His research addresses the theme of social interaction between groups of people from different backgrounds. As an electronic media artist, he creates bridges to build healthy relationships between people
and encourages them to consider the importance of communication.
In his recent piece ‘Ten Worlds: Garden of Life’, he uses a live flower-garden and a water sprayer as a metaphor of value creation in life. When the viewer waters the flowers, s/he sees one of ten short video clips selected by the viewer’s body temperature and the time the person watered the flowers. The clips describe 10 different conditions which can be seen fluctuating in our lives
according to the environment in every single moment.
In the ongoing series of ‘Miscommunication’, he addresses the language barriers common to non-native speakers. The piece generating duplicated and modulated participants’ voice through hand gestures with the data gloves allows them to indirectly experience the confusion of verbal communication barrier.
For a decade, Byeong Sam has exhibited and performed in several international and national venues, including the International Symposium of Interactive Media Design ’05 (ISIMD) in Istanbul, Turkey, Uijeongbu International Digital Art Festival '05‘Digital Playground’ in Seoul, Korea, SIGGRAPH 2004 in Los Angeles, USA, Salon '04 International Digital Art Exhibit in Havana, Cuba, and Jooksan International
Arts Festival '01in Ansung, Korea.
In 2005, Byeong Sam received a MFA in Art and Technology Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he focused on interactive art with electronics and computer programming. He came to the USA to study after completing his BFA (2002) at Hongik University in Seoul, where he studied kinetic sculpture, digital video and performance. In Seoul, Byeong Sam worked as a visual
art director of the theater company ‘KKIPAN,’ which is the hub of the Women with Disability Art and Culture Network in Korea.
