Mixed Signals

In the last decade, technology-based communication has completely redefined our daily existence. We have been flooded with vast amounts of information presented in many ways. Video, audio and text are constructed with many active and passive layers, from multi-player internet games to text messaging to sound recordings in public spaces. Critical thinking has lagged behind as our minds have been overwhelmed and hyperstimulated.

The artwork of Mixed Signals encourages the audience to extract meaning from complexity. Each piece in the show combines two streams of cultural data and bridges the gaps. The effect is profound. Participants and viewers are given a chance to break down and recombine information on their own terms.

This work is vitally important in a time where we have lost the ability to decipher communication. Without understanding the information technology that surrounds us, we have become susceptible to confusion and vulnerable to powerful media techniques.

The artwork itself ranges from acoustic sculptures to interactive video to electromechanical installations. By using the very technology that has permeated society, we generate a space for creative reprocessing.
