PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Interactive Website (screenshot)

Networked Robotic Instrument

Archive Section (website)

Telematic Drum Circle mainly consists of two multimedia components: an interactive website and a networked robotic installation.  Through visiting the website, participants from different locations can remotely play percussion instruments placed at the installation space, while they watch their robotic drum ensemble broadcasted with live streaming video through the website.  In the actual installation space, there are fifteen robotic instruments arranged in a circle with one empty seat for an on-site participant.  The instruments are designed to resemble percussion devices from five different geo-cultural regions including Asia/Pacific, Latin America/Caribbean, Africa, Arab States and Europe/North America.

The live video of the actual percussion ensemble is recorded in every minute with the participants’ names and their locations.  Downloadable video and sound file (for mobile phone) are available in the archive section.  Every participant can use the website to e-mail a sound file to his/her friends and to encourage them to visit the project website and create musical ensemble.

Overall, Telematic Drum Circle unites participants around the world through play and social interaction focused on rhythm--a nonverbal universal language.   When fully realized, Telematic Drum Circle will run continuously for one month.  I anticipate networking with different cultural centers around the world to generate interest and create opportunities for participation through web kiosks: Art Center Nabi, Eyebeam, ICC, the Upgrade!, Futurelab, etc.
