Description - A Study of Abandoned Children

Although society continues to progress, children abandoned because of their parents' divorce or being born from a single mother remain a serious problem. I planned Zoological Garden 2 as a consideration of this tragic situation from an artist's standpoint. I got in close contact with Seoul Samdong Boys' Orphanage, a refuge for abandoned children, where I felt I could pursue a meaningful project. This work was inspired by my childhood memory of making eye contact with a chimpanzee behind the bars of its zoo cage 19 years ago. I tried to create a confused situation where I demolished the boundaries between two opposing concepts that are separated by the cage bars: freedom and confinement, or inside and outside. I installed metal bars and a monitor which have a hidden CC camera in the middle of the orphanage dump so that the viewers can look inside and find themselves behind the bars through the hidden camera. In this way I tried to lead the viewers to challenge their own system of thought. This installation piece was photographed in a 16 shot sequence and finally edited together as a video image to attempt to deliver a clear impression.

The 54 Jurymen and the 14 Flatterers

Where: Samdong Boys' Orphanage in Nanzido, Seoul, Korea

When: November 4, 2000 - December 2, 2000

A Group Exhibition on the Samdong Boys' Orphanage in Nanzido, Seoul, Korea

The Story of the Title

The Samdong Boys' Orphanage is not a gallery, a school, or a special place. It is just the sweet home for the 54 children who eat, play, and sleep there. The 14 flatterers who are strangers to them enter the home to add artistic performances to the 54. The quick-witted flatterer group wants to meet the 54 jurymen and other audiences with more active movement over the existing artistic methods. They plan the flattery with interactive artworks as a kind of service to the boys who will be positive and sensitive jurymen. However, nobody can predict how the jurymen will react. They just hope that the jurymen group can see the world with more affirmative and positive views through the flatterers' approach. Now 14 flatterers stride toward the boys' side, with the belief that their performances will be meaningful for the boys.
